India's student suicide rate exceeds population growth rate

India has seen a troubling rise in student suicides, with the rate increasing by 4.2 percent recently, outpacing the national population growth rate.

Confirming the matter, IC3, a non-profitable organization based on data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), has released a new report on Wednesday (August 28).

According to the report, student suicides have increased at an alarming rate over the past two decades, doubling the national suicide rate.

In 2022, male students comprised 53 percent of the total student suicides. Despite a 6 percent drop in male student suicides between 2021 and 2022, female student suicides rose by 7 percent.

Over the past decade, suicides among male students have incresased by 99 percent, while female student suicides have increased by 92 percent.

The rate of student suicides has grown alarmingly, outstripping both population growth and general suicide trends. The population of 0-24-year-olds has slightly decreased from 582 million to 581 million, yet student suicides have more than doubled, from 6,654 to 13,044.
