Infant dies after falling from mother's lap in Sherpur road crash

A 17-month-old child, Mujaheedul Islam, died after being flung from his mother's lap during a head-on collision between a CNG-run autorickshaw and a 'votvoti' (locally-made three-wheeler) in Nakla, Sherpur. The child's parents and five others were injured in the accident.

The crash occurred in the Dhanakusha Bazar area of Nakla Union on Thursday night, August 6. Mujaheedul Islam was the son of Monirul Islam of the Dhanakusha area.

Police and local sources said the child was thrown onto the road and suffered a severe head injury when the CNG autorickshaw and the votvoti collided head-on. Locals rushed him to Nakla Upazila Health Complex, where duty doctor Dr Manjurul Islam declared him dead.

Locals said Nahid Hasan, 15, and Jahanara Begum, 55, who were in the CNG autorickshaw, were critically injured and transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. The child's mother Nilufa Yasmin, 25, father Monirul Islam, 30, and Furkan Hamid, 30, were also injured and given primary treatment at Nakla Upazila Health Complex.

Nakla Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ripon Chandra Gope confirmed the incident, stating that a 17-month-old child died in the road accident. The involved vehicles have been seized and brought to the police station. Legal proceedings are underway.
