Interim govt voices concern over Sherpur clash that left one dead
The interim government has expressed deep concern over the death of a man in a clash between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists in Jhenaigati of Sherpur, ahead of the upcoming national election.
The violence erupted at the Jhenaigati Upazila Mini Stadium on Wednesday afternoon (January 28), during a programme organised by the local administration for election manifesto presentations by contesting candidates.
The confrontation reportedly began over seating arrangements, leaving Jamaat upazila secretary Rezaul Karim critically injured. He later died in hospital.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the interim government said any loss of life linked to political violence is “completely unacceptable and deeply regrettable.” With less than two weeks remaining before the national election, the government urged all political parties, including BNP and Jamaat, to act responsibly and exercise restraint among leaders, activists and supporters.
The statement stressed that violence, intimidation and loss of life have no place in a democratic process and that maintaining a peaceful environment is a shared responsibility.
The government said police have launched an investigation into the incident and that those responsible will be brought to justice. Security measures across Sherpur district have also been strengthened.
Reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful, free and fair election, the interim government called on all political parties and campaigners to uphold the rule of law and engage voters in a constructive and non-violent manner, noting that the country’s future depends on peace, discipline and democratic conduct.
