International Day Of The Girl Child being observed today
The International Day Of The Girl Child-2025 is being celebrated worldwide today (October 11) to raise awareness on girls' rights and challenges.
This year's theme is "The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis."
First observed in 2012, the day focuses on eliminating gender inequality and promoting girls' rights to education, nutrition, legal protection, healthcare, and safety from violence, including child marriage.
The initiative began through a global campaign titled "Because I am a Girl" led by NGO Plan International. With strong advocacy from its Canadian branch and support from the Canadian government, a proposal was placed at the UN General Assembly.
On December 19, 2011, the UN officially recognised the day, and it was first observed on October 11, 2012. The inaugural theme was "Ending Child Marriage." Each year since, the day highlights a specific issue affecting girls globally.
