Iran issues directive for safe passage of 'Banglar Joyjatra' through Hormuz
Iran has issued special directives to concerned authorities to ensure the safe passage of the Bangladeshi-flagged vessel 'Banglar Joyjatra' through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The decision was announced following a meeting between Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkey. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the matter in a notification on Monday, April 20.
According to the notification, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman sought Iran's cooperation to facilitate the movement of Bangladeshi ships through the Strait of Hormuz. He recalled that Bangladesh was grateful to have been included in the list of countries permitted to transit through the strait in the past.
Iran's deputy foreign minister then verified the matter with relevant departments and informed that necessary directives had been issued for the safe passage of Bangladeshi ships even in the current tense situation.
The two countries also discussed ongoing instability in the Gulf region and issues of bilateral interest. Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman said all parties must exercise restraint to maintain regional peace and prioritise dialogue and diplomacy to resolve problems.
Iran praised Bangladesh's position and expressed interest in future high-level exchange of visits.
This decision is seen as a positive development for Bangladesh's maritime transport sector amid recent tensions over international commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
