Ishraque Hossain, Member of Parliament from Dhaka-6 constituency and State Minister for Liberation War Affairs, has announced he will contest the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayoral election.

In a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday afternoon, February 23, he wrote, "I will contest the city election from Dhaka South, inshallah."

The last election for Dhaka South City mayor was held on February 1, 2020. Ishraque Hossain was the BNP candidate in that election.

Following the fall of the Awami League government after the mass uprising on August 5, 2024, the interim government removed Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh. Subsequently, on March 27, 2025, the election tribunal declared Ishraque Hossain victorious, and the Election Commission published a gazette the following month on April 27 declaring him mayor. However, due to various "procedural complexities," this young BNP leader could not assume the mayor's chair.
