Ishraque supporters continue sit-in; block part of Gulistan–Bangabazar road
Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain continued their sit-in protest in front of Nagar Bhaban for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday, demanding that he be handed over the responsibilities of mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Starting around 10:00am, protestors under the banner of “Dhakabashi” gathered outside the DSCC headquarters. A portion of the Gulistan–Bangabazar road was blocked during the demonstration, causing significant traffic disruption in the area.
As part of the ongoing protest, the Nagar Bhaban building has remained locked for the past five days.
Chanting slogans, demonstrators called for the immediate appointment of Ishraque as mayor and demanded the resignation of Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government.
On March 27, the Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Electoral Tribunal declared Ishraque Hossain, a member of the BNP’s Foreign Affairs Committee, as the rightful mayor of DSCC. The Election Commission later issued a gazette notification on April 27, officially recognising him as mayor.
