An Islamic University (IU) graduate who was recommended for appointment as a government primary school assistant teacher says he was dropped from the final appointment process because he does not have a homestead in his own name at his permanent address.

Mison Acharya, a graduate of the university’s Department of Finance and Banking, said he ranked 17th at the upazila level among candidates for the post.

He grew up with his mother in a rented home in the Kalabagan area of Jhenaidah Sadar. Mison said his father left the family many years ago and that he has lived with his mother in rented accommodation since childhood.

According to Mison, 182 candidates were initially recommended for appointment, but appointment letters were issued to 180. One of the two remaining candidates was facing a legal case, while he was excluded over an issue concerning his permanent address.

He said his maternal uncle had transferred two decimals of land in his name at their ancestral village after he learned that land-related documents might be required for government employment. Mison submitted the deed during the police verification process, but the land has no homestead and he has never lived there.

Mison said he was initially told by officials that submitting the land deed would be sufficient when he asked about a landless certificate. He later learned that he had been excluded because he did not have a homestead at his permanent address.

“My mother raised me working in other people’s homes, and our financial situation is extremely difficult,” Mission said, questioning why being born and raised in a rented home should affect his employment prospects.

Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Md Noman Hossain said a complication had arisen over Mison’s permanent address. The issue has been formally reported by the district primary education office to the Directorate of Primary Education, he said, expressing hope that it would be resolved.
