Jamaat activist detained for assaulting woman in Chattogram
Akash Chowdhury, a suspended Jamaat worker involved in the incident where a woman was kicked at a Gonotantrik Chhatra Jote rally in Chattogram, has been detained. The arrest took place on Sunday (June 1) around 2:30 PM in the Laldi-ghir Par area of the city.
Abdul Karim, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station, confirmed that Akash was apprehended based on secret information.
Akash Chowdhury is the son of Nature Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, former councilor of Ward No. 7, Satkania Municipality, and a former member of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami issued a statement condemning the incident as an “undesirable and hateful act” without specifically naming it. The party clarified that Akash Chowdhury was expelled for disciplinary violations and denied any responsibility for the event.
The party’s statement emphasized that the incident was unknown to the leadership and bore no connection to Jamaat-e-Islami. They attributed the blame solely to those present, especially criticizing Akash Chowdhury for acting without approval.
On May 25, an attack occurred during a program organized by the Democratic Student Alliance, a coalition of leftist student groups, in Jamalkhan, Chattogram. Allegations suggest that Jamaat-Shibir activists carried out the attack under the banner opposing the Shahbagh Unity. Twelve people were injured.
Following the attack, police arrested two individuals, including a student, and filed a case under the speedy trial law.
