A 67-year-old woman died after reportedly suffering a stroke upon hearing that her son, a local BNP leader, sustained critical eye injuries during a clash between activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and the BNP in Bogura's upazila.

The deceased, Hazera Begum, passed away at her residence on Tuesday afternoon (February 10), family members said.

Her son, Masud Rana, was injured in a violent altercation between supporters of the two parties in Parshun village on Monday night. He was initially admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where doctors reportedly expressed concern that he could lose one eye. He has since been referred to the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Family sources said Hazera Begum collapsed after learning about the severity of her son’s injuries and died shortly afterwards.

At least six people from both sides were injured in the clash, according to local sources.

BNP leaders alleged that the violence erupted after two Jamaat activists were detained over allegations of vote-buying in the Bogura-4 (Kahaloo–Nandigram) constituency. They further claimed that Jamaat activists attacked Masud Rana’s house before police arrived at the scene.

Bogura-4 BNP candidate Mosharraf Hossain alleged that Jamaat activists gouged out Masud Rana’s eye.

However, Nandigram Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said police could not confirm whether the eye had been gouged out, adding that doctors would be able to provide clarity.

"Legal action would be taken if a written complaint is filed," he added.
