Jamaat leader Abu Bakar Siddique sent to jail in ex-wife murder case

A court has ordered that Abu Bakar Siddique, a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader and charge-sheeted accused in a case filed over the murder of his ex-wife in Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur, be sent to jail.

Abu Bakar Siddique surrendered before the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Monday, August 4, and filed a bail petition. After the hearing, Tribunal Judge Sadekur Rahman rejected his bail petition and ordered him to be sent to jail. Abu Bakar Siddique is a Rukon (member) of the Char Kalkini Union Jamaat in Kamalnagar upazila. He is the son of Ali Ulla Hawlader of Char Samshuddin village in the same union.

According to court and case documents, Abu Bakar Siddique was named as an accused in the charge sheet of the case filed over the murder of an elderly woman named Saleha Begum on the night of June 15, 2025. Police claimed during investigation that Abu Bakar had secretly married Saleha Begum. Although they later separated, the murder was planned over a dispute regarding Tk 30 lakh given for purchasing land .

The investigating agency alleged that Abu Bakar hired a man named Md Selim for Tk 50,000 to carry out the murder. According to the plan, Saleha Begum was taken to a secluded spot and killed .

The investigation revealed that police recovered Saleha Begum's body from an abandoned homestead on the bank of the Meghna River adjacent to Motirhat in Kamalnagar on June 16, 2025. Her daughter Fatema Begum filed a case against unidentified individuals. During the investigation, when Selim was arrested, he confessed to his involvement in the murder in a statement before the court and also mentioned Abu Bakar Siddique's complicity .

Later, police submitted a charge sheet in court accusing Selim and Abu Bakar Siddique. While Selim has been in jail since his arrest, Abu Bakar remained absconding for a long time. The court later issued an arrest warrant against him.

Plaintiff's lawyer Amjad Hossain said the second accused in the charge sheet, Abu Bakar Siddique, surrendered before the court and filed a bail petition. The court rejected the petition and ordered him to be sent to jail. The case is currently pending trial.

Meanwhile, the deceased Saleha Begum's sons Sharif Uddin and Md Ariful Islam claimed their mother was murdered in a planned manner over a financial dispute. They demanded the maximum punishment for the two accused.

It may be mentioned that the case is currently pending trial. The allegations mentioned in the charge sheet and evidence will be examined through judicial proceedings. The accused will be legally presumed innocent until proven guilty.
