Jamaat leader arrested over attack on BNP leaders

Police have arrested a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in connection with an attack on two BNP leaders in Patharghata of Barguna.

The arrest was made from a pharmacy on Iman Ali Road in Patharghata municipal town on Saturday morning, January 17.

The arrested person is Bazlur Rahman, Ameer of Patharghata municipal Jamaat.

Additional superintendent of police of Patharghata Circle, Shahed Ahmed Chowdhury, confirmed the matter, saying Bazlur Rahman was arrested as an accused in multiple cases over the attack in which Charduani Union Jubo Dal member Sarwar Hossain Faruk and former general secretary of BNP Ward No 6, Selim Bepari, were hacked and injured.

According to police sources, clashes broke out between leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP in the Khalifarhat Chourasta area of Charduani Union on January 13, leaving Sarwar Hossain and Selim Bepari critically injured.

Following the incident, Selim Bepari’s wife, Shahnaz Parveen, filed a case against 54 people with Patharghata Police Station on January 14. Bazlur Rahman is listed as the fifth accused in the case.

Police said drives are continuing to arrest the other accused involved in the incident.
