Jamaat leader nabbed with Tk 50 lakh at Syedpur airport

Law enforcement authorities have detained Belal Uddin, Ameer of Thakurgaon district Jamaat-e-Islami, at Syedpur Airport while carrying approximately Tk 50 lakh in cash, officials said Wednesday (February 11).

According to Nilphamari Superintendent of Police Sheikh Zahidul Islam (PPM), police acted on a tip-off and intercepted Belal Uddin as he arrived on a Novoair flight from Dhaka. A search of his luggage uncovered the cash.

Preliminary questioning indicates the funds may have political significance, and authorities are investigating their source and intended use.

The district police, along with intelligence agencies, are monitoring the matter closely ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary election.
