Jamaat MP’s son-in-law arrested over New Guinea properties attack

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Mizanur Rahman, 59, an accused in a case over an attack, vandalism and looting at the New Guinea Properties housing project in the capital’s ECB Chattar area.

According to the DB, Mizanur is the son-in-law of Mohammad Abdul Gafur, a Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker from Kushtia-2. He was arrested during an operation in the West Matikata area on Monday afternoon (September 28).

The DB said Abdul Gafur was present when Mizanur was arrested. Police did not immediately disclose further details about the specific allegations against him.

A case was filed with Cantonment Police Station on Sunday over the attack on the New Guinea Properties project. Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, a representative of the housing project, filed the case.

The case names several individuals as accused and includes 150 to 200 unidentified people. Mizanur is an accused named in the case, according to police.

The attack took place Saturday night at the housing project in South Manikdi near ECB Chattar. Police and case documents said attackers entered the project, vandalised property and looted valuables. Content creator Salman Muqtadir’s Brownfish studio, located inside the project, was also vandalised and looted.

Several people have already been arrested in connection with the case. BSS reported that Mizanur’s arrest brought the total number detained to seven, while other reports said additional accused had been sent to jail by a Dhaka court.

The investigation into the attack and the alleged looting is ongoing, and the DB said legal proceedings against Mizanur are underway.
