Jamaat-BNP clash in Lakshmipur, 10 injured
Clashes and counter-chases have taken place between Jamaat and BNP leaders and activists at several polling centres in Lakshmipur. At least ten people have been injured.
The incidents occurred on Thursday afternoon at the Poura Shaheed Smriti Academy, Baralia High School, beside Meghna Bazar and in Bhabaniganj in the Lakshmipur-3 constituency. Clashes between BNP and Jamaat supporters were also witnessed at Bijaynagar High School and Hasandi area in the Lakshmipur-2 constituency.
Jamaat candidate for Lakshmipur-3 Sadar constituency Dr Rezaul Karim alleged that BNP terrorists are obstructing voters from casting their votes and carrying out attacks at several centres. He said despite informing the administration, no effective measures have been taken yet.
On the other hand, BNP candidate Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie said supporters of the Jamaat candidate are attacking BNP workers at various centres. However, according to him, voting is still proceeding fairly.
Additional Superintendent of Police Hossain Mohammad Rayhan Kazemi informed that apart from some isolated incidents, voting is proceeding peacefully and in a festive atmosphere at 496 polling centres across four constituencies. Alongside police, approximately 10,000 law enforcement personnel including armed forces, RAB, BGB and Ansar have been deployed for security.
