BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has termed the protest marches of Jamaat-e-Islami and some other parties “unnecessary,” saying their main objective is to create undue pressure, which he described as harmful for democracy and sound decision-making.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at his residence on Thursday (September 18), after returning from Singapore.

Fakhrul questioned the effectiveness of street programmes, saying, “Will problems be solved by holding programmes on the streets? After the fall of the Awami League, we have not taken to the streets on any issue. We want to resolve everything through discussions.”

He expressed hope that the July Charter would also be implemented through dialogue.

On BNP’s stance regarding proportional representation, he said there is “no need for PR in Bangladesh,” noting that discussions on the July Charter are ongoing and the party has already reached consensus on many points. He added that any constitutional changes must come through a parliament elected by the people.

Fakhrul also stated that BNP does not support banning any political party, including the 14-party alliance or Jatiya Party.

When asked about participation in the upcoming UN General Assembly session in the United States, he said he was unsure of his role and would discuss the matter with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. “The country’s democracy and overall development will remain our priority,” he added.

Addressing concerns about foreign influence, Fakhrul asserted, “All decisions of the country must be taken independently. We have always made decisions for Bangladesh ourselves, and we will continue to do so this time as well. There is no need for external decisions.”
