Jamuna Fertilizer Company resumes production after 13 months
After a long 13 months, the country’s largest granular urea fertilizer-producing factory, Jamuna Fertilizer Company in Tarakandi, Jamalpur, has been reconnected to the gas supply.
With the gas supply restored, production of urea started on Thursday, as confirmed by the factory’s General Manager (Administration) Delwar Hossain. He stated, "On Thursday, after Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company increased the gas pressure and reconnected the supply, the production process resumed. However, it will take at least 10-12 more days to fully resume urea production." The General Manager further mentioned that the factory, with a daily production capacity of 1,700 tons of granular urea, requires 45 million cubic feet of gas daily.
Production of urea was halted on January 15, 2024, due to a gas shortage.
The resumption of production has brought joy to Jamuna Fertilizer’s workers, employees, transport workers, fertilizer dealers, farmers, and the general public in the area.
According to factory sources, Jamuna Fertilizer Factory was established in 1991 in Tarakandi, Jamalpur. Initially, the factory’s daily production capacity was 1,700 metric tons. However, due to reduced gas pressure, this capacity later decreased to 1,300 metric tons.
Fertilizer dealers from 16 northern districts, including Jamalpur, Sherpur, Mymensingh, Tangail, and Rajbari, along with about 2,500 dealers, rely on urea from Jamuna Fertilizer. Dealers are worried about potential fertilizer shortages affecting rice cultivation in the current season due to the prolonged closure of the factory.
