Janaza of ex-minister Mosharraf Hossain held
The funeral prayer (janaza) of former minister and freedom fighter Engineer Mosharraf Hossain was held in Chattogram on Thursday (May 14).
The janaza took place at the Jamiatul Falah National Mosque ground in the city around 11:00am.
Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain attended the funeral and paid tribute, saying that Engineer Mosharraf Hossain made significant contributions to the development of greater Chattogram. He added that his political and social roles would be remembered with respect beyond party lines.
Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, a senior leader of the now-banned Awami League and Presidium member, was elected Member of Parliament from the Mirsharai constituency seven times. He served as Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism as well as Housing and Public Works in 1996 and 2014.
A mining engineer by profession, he began his political career during his studies in Lahore through student politics. He also played a significant role in the Liberation War as a sub-sector commander of Sector 1.
He was elected a member of the provincial council in 1970.
Following the mass uprising of 2024, he was arrested from Vatara in Dhaka on October 27. Later, he was released on bail in August 2025 after falling seriously ill. He passed away while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in Dhaka around 10:20am on Wednesday (May 13).
After the janaza, special prayers were offered seeking eternal peace for the deceased.
