The Japanese government has provided $3.5 million in assistance to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to improve the living standards of Rohingya refugees and local communities in Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char.

The Japanese Embassy in Dhaka said this in a statement on Monday (April 28).

The statement said that Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi and IOM Bangladesh Mission Chief Lance Bono signed an agreement in this regard. About 500,000 Rohingya refugees and local communities in Cox's Bazar district and Bhasan Char will receive assistance from this project.

The project will provide protection, shelter, non-food items, LPG distribution, water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as livelihood support for refugees in Bhasan Char and disaster risk reduction and protection services for local communities in Cox's Bazar.

Ambassador Saida expressed hope that the project, with the support of the Japanese government, will improve the living standards of both Rohingya refugees and local communities. I am delighted to sign an agreement just after my first visit to the Cox's Bazar camp. I hope this comprehensive plan will improve the quality of life for Rohingya refugees and local communities in both Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char.
