Jhenaidah ex-MP Shafiqul Alam Apu arrested

Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) arrested Jhenaidah District Awami League President and former MP Shafiqul Alam Apu on Sunday night (August 17) from his residence in capital's Dhanmondi.

Shafiqul Alam is facing multiple charges including vandalism, arson, and involvement in an attack on student protesters in Jhenaidah in August 2024. He has been absconding since August 5, 2024.

Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, confirmed his arrest.

He said, "Shafiqul Islam Apu has been arrested from a house in Dhaka. He is being brought to Jhenaidah. There are multiple cases against him."

"He will be produced in court on Monday morning," the OC added.

Shafiqul Alam Apu was elected Member of Parliament for Jhenaidah-2 in 2008 and later became the president of Jhenaidah District Awami League following the death of Abdul Hai in March 2024.
