JnU bans rallies, meetings indefinitely amid security concerns

Jagannath University (JnU) has imposed an indefinite ban on all rallies, meetings and processions on campus, citing fears of a deterioration in law and order following recent campus violence.

The decision was announced in a notice signed by Proctor Prof Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin on Wednesday night (August 5).

According to the notice, the restriction was imposed after three separate organisations announced programmes at the same venue and time on Thursday, raising concerns over possible clashes. The ban will remain in effect until further notice.

University authorities said all active student organisations have been informed of the decision.

The move follows a series of violent confrontations on August 4, when rival groups, including Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir, clashed during programmes marking the anniversary of the July Mass Uprising. Several students, including leaders of the Jagannath University Central Students' Union (JUCSU), were injured.

In the aftermath of the violence, the university strengthened campus security, formed an investigation committee and vowed disciplinary action against those found responsible under university regulations.

Officials said the latest restriction is a temporary measure aimed at preventing further unrest and maintaining order on campus.
