JnU bus crushed as tree topples during heavy rain
A university bus was extensively damaged after a large tree was uprooted and crashed onto it amid heavy rain and strong winds at Jagannath University (JnU) on Sunday morning (July 12).
No casualties were reported as the bus was empty and nearby students managed to move to safety in time.
The incident took place near the university's Shaheed Minar, where continuous rainfall and gusty winds caused the tree to collapse onto the parked bus, leaving the vehicle badly mangled.
According to witnesses, the tree came down within seconds as strong winds swept across the campus. Fortunately, there were no passengers inside the bus, and students in the surrounding area quickly evacuated, avoiding what could have been a major tragedy.
University officials later visited the site, while workers began clearing the fallen tree and restoring the area.
Speaking to reporters, Transport Administrator Prof. Md. Tariq Bin Atik said the bus suffered extensive damage, with preliminary estimates placing the loss at Tk 300,000 to Tk 400,000.
He also urged the university administration to immediately identify and remove hazardous trees across the campus, warning that the consequences could have been devastating had the tree fallen on students instead of the vehicle.
