JnU forms probe body over attempted rape incident

Jahangirnagar University (JnU) authorities have formed a seven-member investigation committee following an alleged attempted rape and attempted murder of a female student on campus.

The committee has been tasked with submitting its report within seven working days.

The decision was announced in a statement issued late Saturday (May 16) by acting director of the university’s Public Relations Office, Mohammad Mohiuddin.

According to the statement, an external individual allegedly attempted to rape and kill a female student on the night of May 12 inside the campus area. The committee has been formed to determine institutional lapses and identify security-related responsibilities of relevant offices and individuals, along with recommendations.

The decision was taken at an emergency administrative meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan.

The committee is headed by Professor Sohel Rana of the Department of Pharmacy. Other members include Professor Nahid Akhtar of Botany, Professor Zakir Hossain and Professor Zahir Raihan of Philosophy, Professor Nasrin Sultana of Government and Politics, and Professor Kamruzzaman of Zoology. Deputy Registrar Lutfur Rahman Arif from the Higher Education and Scholarship Branch will serve as member secretary.

Following the incident, students have been staging protests and demonstrations on campus, demanding improved security measures and accountability from the administration.
