The murder of Jagannath University Chhatra Dal leader Md. Jobayed Hossain, 25, was planned about a month in advance, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

At a press briefing held Tuesday afternoon (October 21) at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md. Nazrul Islam disclosed the details of the investigation.

Earlier, Jobayed’s brother filed a murder case with Bangshal Police Station around 11.00am the same day. Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the killing—Mahir Rahman, 19, Barjis Shabnam Barsha, 18, and Fardin Ahmed Aylan, 20.

According to police, Jobayed developed a romantic relationship with Barsha while tutoring her, though she had been in a relationship with Mahir. This love triangle ultimately led to the murder.

“Barsha told Mahir that unless Jobayed was eliminated, she could not be with him. Following this, the plan to kill Jobayed was made,” said Additional Commissioner Nazrul Islam, citing confessional statements obtained during interrogation.

Investigators said Barsha informed Mahir that Jobayed would visit her house around 4.00pm on the day of the incident. Acting on the plan, Mahir and his friend Aylan waited downstairs. When Jobayed arrived, an argument broke out, and after Jobayed refused to leave Barsha, Mahir allegedly stabbed him in the neck, causing his death from excessive bleeding.

Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner Mallik Ahsan Uddin said the wounded Jobayed attempted to save himself by climbing the stairs and knocking on several doors, but no one opened them. “He even sought help from Barsha, but she did not respond,” he added.

Asked whether Mahir’s mother surrendered her son to police, Nazrul Islam clarified, “Police applied strategic pressure on the family. They did not hand him over voluntarily—it was part of our operational tactics.”

Senior DMP officials, including Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the Media and Public Relations Division, DC Mallik Ahsan Uddin, and Additional DC Md. Aminul Kabir Tarafdar, were present at the briefing.
