JnU student's hanging body recovered from Dhaka mess

A Jagannath University (JnU) student was found hanging in a student mess in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area on Tuesday night (September 15).

Anik Chandra Pal, 21, a student of the university’s Drawing and Painting Department from the 2023-24 academic session, was found in his room at a mess on BK Ganguly Lane around 9:30pm.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.

According to his roommate and classmate Joy Bhuiyan, Anik had been unusually quiet since Monday. After failing to reach him by phone on Tuesday, a batchmate went to the mess and found the door to his room locked from inside. They eventually broke a window and saw him hanging from the ceiling fan with a cloth around his neck.

Classmates said Anik had recently gone through a breakup and had become withdrawn afterward. His phone was reportedly found switched off and damaged.

However, police said a note recovered from his room referred to his physical health and anxiety over his eyesight. Ban­shal police sub-inspector Md Rubel Hossain said Anik wrote that he had poor vision and feared he might lose his eyesight in the future.

Police said the circumstances surrounding his death were still being investigated.

An assistant professor and assistant proctor of the university, Subhas Pal, went to the hospital after learning of the incident. He said the university had contacted Anik’s family and was assisting with the necessary legal procedures.
