JnU students stage sit-in, lock VC-Treasurer in administrative building
Students of Jagannath University’s (JnU) 20th batch of the 2024–25 academic year staged a sit-in at the university’s administrative building on Sunday (January 25), demanding the introduction of a housing allowance.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Rezaul Karim and Treasurer Prof. Sabina Sharmin were reportedly trapped inside the building during the protest.
The demonstration began at 10:00am outside the administrative building. By midday, students had locked the main gate and vowed to continue their agitation until their demands were met.
Earlier in the morning, the students had marched from the Vice-Chancellor’s residence, passing through Kola Bhaban, Shaheed Sajid Bhaban, and the Faculty of Science, chanting various slogans including: "20 Batch Action, Direct Action," before gathering at the administrative building.
The students cited severe hardship due to the university’s housing shortage and warned of intensified actions if the housing allowance is not implemented promptly.
As of this report, the university administration has not issued any official statement regarding the protest.
