Joint drive to clear footpaths in Gulshan
The Rajdhani Unnayan Kartik (RAJUK) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) have launched a major eviction drive to clear footpaths and public roads in the Gudaraghat area adjacent to the elite area of Gulshan-1. In this joint drive conducted, more than fifty illegal temporary shops along the lakeside and road were demolished on Friday morning.
The eviction drive began in the Gudaraghat area around 10:40am on Friday. On the spot, it was seen that rows of shops built on the footpaths were being demolished using heavy wheel excavators of RAJUK. The officials concerned evicted all the illegal structures built blocking the road from the main road leading from Gulshan-1 to Gudaraghat to Lakeside.
A large number of police personnel were deployed in the area to prevent any untoward situation during the drive. Local residents welcomed the move, saying that for a long time, ordinary pedestrians were suffering greatly due to these illegal encroachments.
According to the pre-scheduled, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam, DNCC Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan and RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md. Riazul Islam were supposed to be present in this drive. However, due to unavoidable reasons, they could not attend in the end, DNCC confirmed through SMS.
Officials participating in the drive said that this special step has been taken to provide the city residents with the opportunity to move on the sidewalks without any hindrance. They warned that this 'zero tolerance' policy against illegal encroachment of sidewalks and public spaces will continue in the future.
After the drive, detailed information about the amount of space recovered and the next maintenance plan will be officially announced by DNCC and RAJUK.
