Joint forces launch major sweep in Salempur forest, several detained
Chattogram authorities have launched a large-scale joint operation in Sitakunda’s Salempur forest, with several suspects already detauned.
This marks the largest law enforcement operation in recent years targeting a specific area.
The operation began at dawn on Monday (March 9), led by the army with police and paramilitary units surrounding all forest entry points overnight.
Chattogram Range Additional DIG (Crime) Nazmul Hasan confirmed the arrests to reporters, stating that several suspects have already been detained.
He said, "The operation is ongoing and aimed at dismantling terrorist hideouts and seizing illegal weapons."
Earlier, Md Rasel, additional Superintendent (Media) of Chattogram District Police, confirmed the development.
Around 4,000 personnel are participating, including 550 army soldiers, 1,800 police, 330 APBn, 400 RAB, 120 BGB, 15 APCs, three dog squads, and three reserve helicopters.
Law enforcement teams have been divided into multiple units: some are conducting searches in the lower settlements, while others move along hilly paths. Checkposts have been set up along potential escape routes to prevent suspects from fleeing.
The Ministry of Home Affairs ordered the operation, expected to continue until Tuesday afternoon. Officials described it as the largest security sweep in the area in recent years.
Salempur forest has been notorious as a criminal hideouts for over two decades. During a RAB raid on January 19, one officer was killed and three others injured.
“The operation is carefully planned based on recent intelligence reports. We are also considering setting up a temporary camp in Salimpur to maintain law and order,” added Nazmul Hasan.
Officials confirmed that the area remains cordoned off and search operations will continue until the mission is complete.
