Journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar's body found in Meghna River: Police

The body of missing writer-journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar has been found in the Meghna River, police said.


Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ramna Division Deputy Police Commissioner Md. Masud Alam confirmed the matter to Views Bangladesh at 5:44 pm on Friday.


He said that police have spotted his body in the Meghna River in the afternoon. A recovery team has already been headed towards the spot. 


It is reported that on Friday afternoon, his body was seen floating in Char Balakia, Kalagachhia area of Gazaria. Upon receiving the news, the river police recovered the body.


Alamgir Hossain, Police Superintendent of Narayanganj, said, “Based on the condition of the body, it appears he died roughly a day ago. The body has begun to decompose, and there are no visible signs of injury. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after an autopsy.”


Bibhuranjan Sarkar, Senior Assistant Editor at the daily Ajker Patrika, sent an article to bdnews24.com at 9:15 am on Thursday. His family members said that he left home around 10.00 am, saying he was heading to the office, but never returned.

An immediate investigation by Views Bangladesh revealed that after leaving home, Bibhuranjan Sarkar boarded a motorcycle in front of Fortune Market in the capital.

Md Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said, “CCTV footage confirms he got on a motorcycle. The investigation is ongoing, and many questions will be answered once the bike is located.”

Earlier, Bibhuranjan Sarkar’s son, Rit Sarkar, filed a General Diary (GD) at Ramna Police Station on Thursday night to report his father missing. The GD noted that Bibhuranjan Sarkar had left his mobile phone at home when leaving for the office. When he did not return by 9.00 pm, his family contacted Kamrul Hasan, editor of Ajker Patrika, and learned that he had not arrived at the office. Despite searching in multiple locations, they were unable to find him.
