Journalists have role in building society, state: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said journalists have a significant role in building society and the state, describing journalism as a highly challenging profession on Friday.
He also urged journalists to remain united to protect their rights, saying many media workers are deprived of fair wages under the wage board due to a lack of unity among journalists.
Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an exchange of views meeting with journalists at the Mirza Ruhul Amin Auditorium in Thakurgaon on Friday afternoon.
He said journalists are often subjected to harassment and repression, while responsible journalism is essential for the country and the nation.
Referring to former Daily Ittefaq editor Manik Mia, he said the veteran journalist had influenced the making of ministers without becoming one himself.
The BNP leader, however, warned that irresponsible journalism could be harmful to the country and the nation.
Addressing journalists, he said reports should include the statements of the accused or the opposing party before publication.
Mentioning the “July uprising,” he said a new opportunity had emerged in the country after the movement and urged journalists to utilise that opportunity by working for the people and the nation.
Mirza Fakhrul also described the Family Card programme as a groundbreaking initiative and said women would be empowered through such measures.
He called on journalists to publish constructive and positive reports that would contribute to the development of Thakurgaon.
Acting President of Thakurgaon Press Club Lutfor Rahman Mithu, senior journalist Abdul Latif and journalists from various print, electronic and online media outlets in the district were present at the meeting.
