JU decides to remove ‘Bangabandhu’ from institute name
The Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration has decided to remove the name "Bangabandhu" from the Bangabandhu Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture.
The decision was made during a Syndicate meeting on Sunday evening at the university's new administrative building, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kamrul Ahsan. According to Registrar Azizur Rahman Mukul, the decision was taken in response to demands from the institute's students.
Earlier in the afternoon, at 4:00 pm, students of the institute held a sit-in in front of the administrative building, demanding three things: changing the institute's name, addressing the classroom shortage immediately, and adding Comparative Literature as a subject in the BCS (Bangladesh Civil Service) exam.
After the Syndicate meeting ended at 10.00 pm, the decision to remove 'Bangabandhu' and rename the institute as the 'Comparative Literature and Culture Institute' was announced. The students welcomed the decision and celebrated by distributing sweets.
The Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture at Jahangirnagar University began its academic activities in the 2017-18 academic year.
