A female student of Jahangirnagar University has alleged that she was confined and tortured at a house. The incident occurred around 11:30 pm on Tuesday in the Islamnagar area adjacent to the university. The victim called the national emergency number 999, following which Ashulia police rescued her. A case has been filed at Savar's Ashulia police station on behalf of the victim.

The accused has been identified as Tariqul Islam, a former student of the 44th batch (2014-15 academic year) of the Institute of Information Technology.

Police first took the rescued student to the university medical centre, where she described the incident to Student Welfare Adviser Chhanda Khatun.

Quoting the victim, teacher Chhanda Khatun said, "The victim had a personal relationship with the accused, which later ended. On Tuesday, Tariqul Islam came in front of the hall and pressured her to go to his house, saying he wanted to talk for the 'last time'. When the student refused, he blackmailed her in various ways."

"The victim went to his house on the pretext of buying iftar items. After she arrived, the accused taped her mouth, beat her and poured hot water on her hands. At one point during the torture, when the victim wanted to go out to buy medicine for her burn wounds, the accused locked the room from outside. The girl then called the national emergency number 999, and Ashulia police went to the spot and rescued her," the teacher added.

The victim was later sent to Savar Upazila Health Complex from the university medical centre, she informed.

University Medical Centre physician Tanvir Hossain said, "The girl has burns on a three to four centimetre area of her hand. As our centre does not have complete treatment facilities for such burn injuries, she has been transferred to Savar."

A case has been filed at Ashulia police station in connection with the incident. Officer-in-Charge Rubel Hawlader said, "A case has been registered based on the victim's complaint. The matter is being investigated with utmost importance, and police operations are ongoing to bring the accused under the law."
