JU students hold torchlight procession protesting recent killings
Students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) held a torchlight procession on Saturday evening (July 12) to protest a series of recent killings in the country.
The demonstration, organised under the banner "Jahangirnagar Against Oppression," began at the university's Shaheed Minar and ended with a rally at Battala.
The protest was sparked by the brutal killing of businessman Sohag in Dhaka's Mitford area, the murder of Jubo Dal leader Mahbubur Rahman in Khulna, and the killing of an imam in Chandpur.
At the rally, student speakers demanded an end to extrajudicial killings and called for strict punishment for those responsible. They said the government's failure to take action has created a culture of impunity, which is encouraging more violence.
Earlier in the day, the JU unit of Chhatra Dal also held a protest on campus. At their rally, leaders accused the authorities of trying to mislead the public about the nature of the killings and said the government could not escape responsibility.
The protesters said they would continue to raise their voices until justice is served.
