Jubo dal activist shot, 8 injured in clash between 2 groups in Noakhali
A Jubo Dal activist named Shakil Mahmud, 31, was shot in a clash between two parties over a past dispute in Begumganj Upazila of Noakhali. At least 8 people from both sides were injured in the incident.
The incident took place around 9:30pm in the Bahar Shop area of Taherpur village in Chhayani Union of the upazila on Monday (April 27).
The injured Shakil Mahmud is a resident of Rameshwarpur village in Ward No. 1 of Chhayani Union. He is said to be a candidate for the post of president of the local Jubo Dal.
The injured include Alauddin, 50, Mahar Ali, 59, his wife Monowara Begum, 50, son Mahfuzur Rahman, 22, daughter Nasrin Akter, 18, Alamgir Hossain, 26, and Zahir, 50.
According to police and local sources, there was a dispute between the two groups over an incident on the recent election day. Tensions arose over the dispute after a procession at Chhayani Bazar on Monday afternoon.
As a result, a clash broke out between the two parties in the Taherpur area at night. At one stage of the clash, gunfire erupted. Shakil Mahmud was shot in the chest. Several others were also injured.
Locals rescued the injured and first took them to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital. Later, as Shakil's condition was critical, he was sent to Dhaka for better treatment.
There have been conflicting allegations over the incident. One party claims that the incident was caused by an attack by the opponent. The other party denies the allegations and says that it is the result of an internal conflict.
In this regard, Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shamsuzzaman said that the police visited the scene after receiving the information. Necessary legal action will be taken if a written complaint is received.
