Jubo Dal, Chhatra League supporters clash in Rupganj, three injured

At least three people were injured after supporters of the Jubo Dal and the banned Chhatra League clashed in Rupganj of Narayanganj on Monday night (September 28), with several rounds of blank firing, attacks on homes and businesses and the torching of a motorcycle reported during the violence.

The incident took place around 10pm in Barpa area of Tarabo municipality following an altercation between Arzu Bhuiyan, organising secretary of the Jubo Dal’s Ward 6 unit, and Chhatra League leader Rafin Bhuiyan over a political issue, according to local sources.

The sources said Arzu struck Rafin on the head with a brick during the argument. Rafin then left the area and later returned to Barpa Bus Stand from Murapara on two motorcycles, where he allegedly fired four blank shots, triggering panic among residents.

A chase and counter-chase between supporters of the two sides subsequently developed into a clash, local residents said.

According to the sources, Arzu’s supporters later set fire to a motorcycle belonging to Rafin’s side and allegedly attacked and vandalised 16 businesses and homes belonging to Rafin and his relatives.

Three people, including Eyar Hossain, were injured when they tried to intervene.

Police led by Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam rushed to the area and brought the situation under control. No arrests were reported immediately after the incident.

Inspector (Investigation) of Rupganj Police Station Muktar Hossain said police responded quickly after receiving information about the clash and restored order.

“A case has been filed over the incident. Efforts are underway to arrest those involved,” he said, adding that the situation was normal at the time of his statement.
