Jubo Dal leader shot dead in broad daylight in Raozan

A Jubo Dal leader was shot dead in broad daylight in Raozan upazila, Chattogram, on Saturday afternoon, June 13. The incident took place around 1:30 pm at the Chowmuhani Bazaar in Pahartali union under the upazila. A group of assailants arrived on motorcycles and shot him dead before fleeing.

Tension has spread across the area following the killing. Agitated locals have brought out processions and chanted slogans demanding justice for the murder. They have also blocked the Chattogram-Kaptai road in the Pahartali area in protest.

The deceased has been identified as Masud Ul Haque Chowdhury, a resident of Betagi union in Rangunia upazila. His elder brother, Swapan Chowdhury, is a former chairman of Betagi union. Masud was active in the youth wing of BNP, local sources said.

Raozan Pahartali union BNP president Nurul Alam said a group of assailants arrived on a motorcycle and fired several shots before fleeing. "Masud was the senior joint convener of Rangunia upazila Jubo Dal. We demand that those involved be arrested and punished," he said.

Assistant Police Superintendent of the Raozan-Rangunia circle, Belayet Hossain, said the victim was shot dead by unknown assailants. The body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy. Efforts are underway to identify and bring those involved to justice.

According to CMP Commissioner, after the change of power on August 5, 2024, 24 murder incidents have taken place in Raozan upazila. Most of the victims were BNP and its associate bodies' leaders and activists, he said.
