Jubo Dal leaders and activists have reportedly been entered Shyamnagar Upazila Press Club in Satkhira and attacked journalist Samiul Monir with country-made weapons.

Police have detained two persons, including a Jubo Dal leader, in this incident. The incident took place around 1pm on Monday at the Press Club building adjacent to the Upazila Parishad.

The two arrested are Shyamnagar Upazila Jubo Dal joint convener Bablu Rahman and BNP supporter Abdur Rahim.

Eyewitnesses said that 25-30 leaders and activists, including Upazila Jubo Dal member secretary Anwarul Islam, entered the Press Club building and launched an attack on Shyamnagar Upazila correspondent of the Daily Samakal, Samiul Monir. He was hit indiscriminately with bricks, hammers and iron rods.

Upon receiving the information, Shyamnagar Police reached the spot, rescued Samiul and admitted him to the Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex in critical condition.

Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khaledur Rahman said, 'As soon as the news of the attack was received, the police reached the spot and detained two persons. Efforts are on to capture the others.'

On February 23, a report titled "Jubo League-Jubo Dal-Jubo Bibhag mile Kholpetua-Kapotaksha noder balu loot" was published in the daily Samakal. Since the report was published, Samiul Monir has been receiving threats in various ways.

When contacted, Jubo Dal member secretary Anwarul Islam said that a human chain was being formed in front of the Press Club today due to the incident of beating a businessman yesterday. At that time, Samiul Monir came there and abused them in foul language.
