Jubo league activist arrested over train arson in Mymensingh
Police have arrested Jubo League activist Md Sohel Mahmud, 27, for allegedly being involved in arson on a train in Mymensingh.
On Friday November 21, he was produced in court in a case filed under the special powers act on charges of sabotage, where he gave a confessional statement.
Kotwali Model Thana police conducted a raid on Thursday night in the city’s Patgudam area and arrested Sohel Mahmud. He is the son of Abdul Halim from Char Nilkhisia union in Sadar upazila.
Kotwali Model Thana officer-in-charge Md Shibirul Islam said the arrested Sohel is a close follower of Rasel Pathan, president of the metropolitan youth league. On Rasel Pathan’s instructions, Sohel and a group carried out arson on a train by scattering gunpowder. He added that money had been sent to them in exchange for the sabotage. The incident was exposed due to a dispute over the distribution of that money. Subsequently, Sohel was arrested based on secret information. Operations are ongoing to arrest others involved in the incident.
GRP Thana officer-in-charge Md Aktar Hossain said Sohel Mahmud has given a confessional statement in court. Surveillance in railway areas has been increased to ensure train safety.
Early on Wednesday, miscreants set fire to a Zaria local train at the wash pit near Mymensingh Junction Station by sprinkling gunpowder. The duty ansar members quickly brought the situation under control. A case was later filed naming unknown persons as accused.
