Jubo League activists protest in Chattogram with shrouds on heads
Leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Awami Jubo League staged a protest march in Chattogram's Agrabad commercial area with shrouds tied around their heads. The procession was held under the banner of the Chattogram Metropolitan unit of the organisation in front of the Power Development Building on Friday morning, June 5.
A video of the march later went viral on social media, sparking fresh discussion and tension across the city.
The nearly 58-second video shows the procession starting from the port area and moving along Sheikh Mujib Road towards Agrabad intersection. Participants had shrouds tied on their heads. Banners carried by them protested issues including child deaths, child abuse, hikes in electricity and gas prices, and other social concerns.
The march later gathered in front of the Power Development Building, where activists chanted slogans.
According to local sources, this was the third such protest march by banned political organisations in Chattogram city this month. Earlier on Wednesday, a procession was reported in the Anannya residential area, and on Monday, a march by the banned Chhatra League was reported at GEC intersection. Police have arrested at least 70 individuals linked to banned organisations from various police station areas following these incidents.
An Assistant Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (Public Relations) said those involved in the march are being identified by analysing the viral video, and legal proceedings are underway.
The administration has stepped up surveillance over the law and order situation in Chattogram following these recent incidents.
