Police have detained Badiuzzaman Badal, a former employee of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) and Jubo League activist, while he was preparing to take part in a procession supporting the banned Awami League.

He was detained from the Ambottola Bazar area near the university campus on Friday night (June 5), police said.

According to police and local sources, Badal and several others had gathered in the area to organise a procession in support of the banned political organisation. Acting on intelligence, police, along with local residents, moved in to disperse the gathering. While others managed to flee, Badal was detained at the scene and later taken to Kotwali Police Station.

Badal is a former general secretary of the JUST Employees’ Association and is locally known for his involvement in Jubo League politics.

Masum Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station, confirmed the arrest, saying a special police team is investigating the incident and the detainee is currently being interrogated.

Legal proceedings are underway, he added.
