Jubo League leader Rana hacked to death in Jashore
A local Jubo League leader was hacked and beaten to death in Chaugachha upazila, Jashore, on Thursday morning, June 11. Jewel Ahmed Rana, 40, died while undergoing treatment at Jashore General Hospital around 12:30 pm. His family has accused local BNP leaders and activists of being involved in the killing.
Rana was a member of the convening committee of the local Patibila union Jubo League. He had been in hiding after the August 5 mass uprising last year but returned to the area following the national election in February.
According to local sources, Rana had an altercation with a local butcher named Yusuf Ali at the Muktadah intersection in the morning. Following this, a group of 5-6 people led by Patibila union BNP vice-president and UP member Nazrul Islam attacked him with sharp weapons and sticks. Relatives took him first to Chaugachha Upazila Health Complex and then to Jashore General Hospital, where he died.
Rana's wife, Maya Begum, claimed that the attackers are BNP politicians. She said her husband had gone to a nearby tea stall while getting their daughter ready for school when the attack occurred.
Chaugachha upazila BNP president MA Salam denied the allegation, saying Rana was killed over a local land dispute and that BNP leader Nazrul Islam was not involved.
Chaugachha Police Station OC Mamunur Rashid said preliminary investigation suggests the killing stemmed from a previous enmity between Rana and the butcher, Yusuf Ali. Preparations are underway to file a case.
