Jubo League leader stabbed to death in Rajbari

A Jubo League leader, Shariful Islam Hira, 40, was stabbed to death in Goalanda, Rajbari, following a dispute over money. He was the publicity secretary of Goalanda Pourasabha Jubo League.

The incident took place around 9am on Saturday, August 8, in the Torair Mor area of Ward No 7 under Goalanda Pourasabha.

Shariful Islam Hira lived at his in-laws' house in the Kazipara area of Ward No 7. He was the son of the late Jabed Bhuiya of Bahadurpur village in Ward No 4 of Ujanchar Union in the upazila.

Following the incident, Rajbari Detective Branch and Goalanda Ghat Police arrested the accused, Kamrul Fakir, 36, within about two hours of the murder. Kamrul collected tolls from easy-bikes operating in Goalanda Pourasabha. He was the son of the late Siddik Fakir of Kumrakandi village in Ward No 3.

According to family members and police, Shariful and Kamrul were close friends. A dispute had been ongoing between them over Tk 6,000 from drug sales, which Kamrul was owed by Shariful. Shariful paid Tk 3,000 about a week ago, and a quarrel erupted over the remaining Tk 3,000 two days ago.

Following this, on Saturday morning, Shariful was returning home after shopping at Goalanda market. When he reached the Torair Mor area, Kamrul stabbed him in the ribs and fled, according to police and family.

Locals took a critically injured Shariful to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, but he died on the way.

Goalanda Upazila Health Complex Residential Medical Officer Dr Md Rumel Hasan said Shariful was brought to the hospital dead. Preliminary reports suggest he died from excessive bleeding.

Rajbari Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Shahidul Islam said a man named Shariful Islam was killed in a stabbing incident in the morning. The prime accused, Kamrul Fakir, has been arrested. He stabbed Shariful after not receiving the owed money for several days.

Police have prepared an inquest report on the deceased's body and sent it to the morgue for autopsy.
