Jubo League leader's son held for burning woman alive in Brahmanbaria
An unidentified woman was allegedly burned alive in Akhaura, Brahmanbaria, with her body discovered in a pit burned to ashes.
The incident occurred in the Gazir Bazar area of South Union in Akhaura upazila on Tuesday morning.
Police have detained one suspect, Farhan Roni, son of Shahnewaz Bhuiya, general secretary of the South Union Jubo League in the upazila.
Akhaura South Union Parishad member Zahir Mia explained that a swan was reportedly stolen the night before from a residence in Gazir Bazar. While searching for the missing bird, Shahnewaz Bhuiya noticed smoke coming from an abandoned tin house on Tuesday morning. When confronted, Farhan claimed he was burning leaves.
However, suspicion grew when two brothers, Enamul and Roman, along with their cousin Obaidul, decided to check the scene. Farhan allegedly became angry and issued threats to kill them. The men, accompanied by local residents, found the burning body inside a pit. The police were subsequently alerted and retrieved the remains.
Obaidullah, a local resident, said the body was so severely burned that identifying the gender was difficult. However, police suspect the victim was a woman due to a bangle found on the hand.
Akhaura police station Inspector (Investigation) Shahinur Islam confirmed: “The body was extensively burned, but we believe it belongs to a woman because of the bangles. CID and PBI officials are working on identifying the victim. A suspect, Farhan Roni, has been arrested, and legal proceedings are underway.”
Further details about the victim or a potential motive remain under investigation.
