Jubo League stages flash march in Kaliakair, Jubo Dal holds counter-rally
Activists of the banned Awami League’s youth wing, Jubo League, staged a brief flash march on the Dhaka-Tangail highway at Kaliakair in Gazipur, on Wednesday (September 2), prompting a counter-march by local Jubo Dal activists.
The march was held around the Pallibidyut area of the upazila in the afternoon.
According to witnesses, a group of Jubo League activists suddenly appeared on the highway carrying banners and festoons and marched for about five minutes before leaving the area.
The march was led by Khatab Molla, a former councillor of Ward 7 of Kaliakair municipality and former Jubo League leader, according to local sources.
Soon after news of the march spread, more than 100 activists of Kaliakair municipal Jubo Dal brought out a counter-march in the same area, protesting the street programme by the banned organisation and warning its activists against holding similar programmes in the future.
Amzad Hossain, member secretary of Kaliakair municipal Jubo Dal, said they organised the protest march to oppose and warn the Jubo League activists.
Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliakair Police Station, said, "Some Awami League activists attempted to hold a march in the Pallibidyut area but left before police reached the spot."
"BNP can protest against such activities. Legal action will be taken in the incident," he added.
