JUCSU CEC vows to resign if vote rigging proven
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and hall union elections, Professor Md Moniruzzaman, has declared that he will resign if allegations of vote rigging or ballot fraud are proven.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday afternoon, he said, “The election was conducted fairly and transparently. If anyone can prove rigging or fake votes, I will step down, and I will not even take my pension benefits.”
Addressing the media, the CEC added, “Those who boycotted the election did so as a personal choice. The Election Commission has nothing to do with that. In a democracy, some may choose to boycott while others participate—it is their right.”
Regarding the resignation of election commissioner Professor Mohammad Mafruhi Sattar, Moniruzzaman said, “We have not yet received any official resignation letter from him. Therefore, we have no formal information on this matter.”
He further noted, “We are not calculating gains or losses while conducting the vote count. JUCSU has its own regulations, and we are simply following those.”
This year, a total of 11,897 students were eligible to vote—6,115 male students and 5,782 female students. Around 67 to 68 percent of votes were cast. The counting of votes in all 21 halls at the university's Senate building has been completed. The Election Commission is hopeful of announcing the election results by 7 pm.
