JUCSU Election Commission member resigns
Professor Mafruhi Sattar, election commission member of the Jahangirnagar University Central Student Union (JUCSU) and Hall Union elections, has resigned, citing concerns over the fairness of the process. He announced his resignation on Friday evening, September 12.
“What we understand by a level playing field did not exist in this election. Despite pressure to remain in my position, I am stepping down,” he said.
Vote counting for the hall unions has concluded, and the central union votes are currently being tallied. Professor Moniruzzaman, Chief Election Commissioner of JUCSU, said the number of polling officers has been increased for the central union count, and results are expected by tonight.
The JUCSU election saw a total of 11,743 registered voters, with approximately 67–68% turnout. A total of 177 candidates contested 25 positions in the central union, including nine candidates for the vice president post and eight for the general secretary post.
In the 10 female residential halls, 59 out of 150 positions had no candidates, while 67 positions had only a single candidate. Voting took place for just 24 positions. Among the university’s 21 halls, candidates in two halls were elected uncontested.
The election was held on Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm, during which five panels, including the one nominated by Chhatra Dal, boycotted the polls.
