A court has granted bail to July movement activist Tahrima Jannat Surovi, 17, in cases filed over extortion and other allegations, including one lodged by a journalist.

Her bail was approved on Monday evening, January 5, Surovi’s lawyer Advocate Rashed Khan confirmed.

Surovi is the daughter of Md Selim Mia of East Gopalpur in Tongi, Gazipur, and a first-year secondary-level student at Bhawal Badre Alam Government College.

Earlier in the day, a Gazipur senior judicial magistrate court granted her a two-day remand. After the hearing, her family members, classmates and leaders of the July movement gathered at the court premises demanding her release and legal action against those responsible.

Later, a revision was filed with the district judge’s court against the remand order. After the remand was cancelled, a bail petition was submitted to the chief judicial magistrate’s court, which granted bail in the evening.

Surovi was arrested from her residence in Tongi on December 25 over allegations of extortion, trapping a businessman in Gulshan for money and making derogatory remarks about the home adviser and the army chief.
