The National Consensus commission members on Wednesday (October 15), met with Dr. Mohammad Yunus at his residence and decided that the July National Charter will be signed on Friday (October 17) at the South Plaza of the National Parliament.

An “urgent meeting” of political parties is underway under the leadership of Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus to resolve uncertainty over the signing of the July National Charter.

The meeting began around 6:00pm at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, with representatives from BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, CPB, Gono Songhoti Andolon, JSD, Workers Revolutionary Party, AB Party, and others in attendance.

According to Ali Riaz, vice president of the National Consensus Commission, parties differ on the method of implementing the charter, though all agree on holding a referendum. Some parties want implementation assurances before signing.

The charter, based on 84 reform proposals from six reform commissions, was sent to political parties on Tuesday night (October 14).

However, divisions remain as the NCP demands a constitutional order before signing, while BNP and Jamaat have expressed reservations over unaddressed clauses and unclear implementation methods.
