The United Nations (UN) is sending a fact-finding mission to Bangladesh next week to investigate the atrocities during student protests in July and first week of August, committed allegedly by police, RAB and Awami League and Chhatra League armed leaders and activists.

According to a press release sent to media by the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser, UN human rights chief Volker Turk informed this to Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday (August 15).

Quoting a UN official, the press release said, “For the first time, the UN Fact Finding Mission is going to investigate the massive human rights violations in the country. Since the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, there is no such precedence of killing hundreds of protestors including students, children and people from all walks of life by law enforcing personnel.”

Meanwhile, UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis met with the Foreign Affairs Adviser on Thursday (August 15). Emerging out of the meeting, Gwyn told reporters that their technical team will come to Bangladesh next week.
