Kalbaishakhi storms likely in 11 districts by midnight: Met office

The Met Office has forecast Kalbaishakhi storms with gusty winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour in 11 regions of the country by 1:00 am on Friday night, May 22. River ports in these areas have been asked to hoist warning signal number one.

The forecast was issued for inland river ports on Friday afternoon.

According to the forecast, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Kushtia, Jashore, Mymensingh, Barishal, Noakhali, Chattogram and Sylhet regions may experience temporary gusty or squally winds of 45 to 60 kilometres per hour from the west or north-west, accompanied by rain or thunderstorms.

A mild heatwave is currently sweeping over Khulna, Jashore, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts and may continue for some time.

In a separate 120-hour forecast from 9:00 am Friday, the Met office said an extension of a low-pressure system over West Bengal has reached the northern Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, many places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, some places in Rajshahi, Dhaka and Chattogram divisions, and one or two places in Khulna and Barishal divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with gusty winds and lightning. Moderate to heavy rainfall may also occur in some parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions.
